Income-tax Return Filing

Income-tax Return Filing

"Preparation and e-filing of income-tax returns for individuals, firms, companies, and trusts."

Income-tax return filing is the process of computing total income under the heads prescribed by the Income-tax Act, applying the correct ITR form, and uploading the return on the e-filing portal within the due date. The form depends on the status of the assessee and the nature of income — salary, house property, business or profession, capital gains, and other sources — and on whether the accounts are subject to audit.

Preparation starts with collecting Form 16, 26AS, AIS/TIS, bank interest certificates, capital-gain statements, GST turnover where relevant, and the trial balance. These sources are reconciled so that income offered matches what the department already has on record. Deductions, exemptions, and carry-forward losses are checked against the conditions of the relevant sections. Advance tax and TDS credits are matched before the tax payable or refundable is computed.

After the return is filed, the acknowledgement and computation are stored with the working file. Defective-return notices that arise from mismatched TDS, wrong form selection, or incomplete schedules are easier to resolve when that file exists. Revised or updated returns, where the law permits, follow the same computation trail.

For entities with audit requirements, the return is aligned with the tax-audit report and financial statements so that turnover, profit, and balance-sheet schedules do not contradict one another.
