Notices under the Income-tax Act — including those for incomplete returns, information requests, scrutiny, reassessment, and outstanding demand — have prescribed response windows and require replies that match the department’s record with the assessee’s books. Handling these notices is a documentation exercise first and a legal submission second.
The file for a notice typically contains the notice text, the ITR as filed, 26AS and AIS for the year, the computation, relevant ledgers and invoices, and earlier correspondence. Each query is answered with the fact, the document reference, and the section relied upon. Where the department’s information differs from the return, the difference is reconciled rather than restated.
For scrutiny and reassessment, statements of facts, legal submissions, and paper-books are prepared so that the assessing officer can trace every figure. Rectification applications under section 154 and responses to outstanding demand are supported by challan and credit workings. Adjournment requests, where needed, are filed within the portal timeline.
A closed notice file — notice, reply, order, and effect on tax — is retained with the year’s return so that a later proceeding on the same year does not start from memory.
